Just wanna start a new topic. Well, personally after some experiences, I think the kind of comedy Russell uses DOES makes people laugh, but at the same time makes the life of new immigrants more difficult. I realised that when I was in Northern Ontario and a bunch of white guys started shouting 'SOmebodys gonna get hur real bad' For no damn reason, white people get an idea that immigrants are dumb because of their accent, but stats show that immigrants are way better off in the Long Run. Well, people say no ones getting offended cuz of the jokes as a brown guy is makin fun of brown people. But, the audience doesnt realise that Russell is just a white dude in brown skin. Immigrants DO GET OFFENDED by his jokes !!

Pls discuss.

Hey Raj.

Not sure how much you know about RP, but calling him a 'white dude in brown skin' just isn't the way to go. It's a shame that you had a bad experience in Northern Ontario, but what did you expect? It's Northern Ontario? Can't believe you'd be surprised by this.

You can't fault him for assimilating. Also, don't forget that RP was born here in Toronto in 1970. What exactly is your expectation of someone who was born in Canada? Should he have some kind of messed-up hybrid Canadian / South Asian accent after living here for almost for 40 years?

I'd strongly suggest that you check-out the CBC documentary that is available on Youtube about RP. Perhaps then you'd get a better understanding of what it was like being an immigrant in suburban Ontario in the mid-seventies - to which I can guarantee you, your very small experience up north, will not compare. Have you ever been beaten up, spat on, had your bike vandalized, had garden hoses turned on you and generally harrassed because of your brown skin? Maybe, maybe not. But I can assure you that both RP and myself did. We fought back with our fists and came up tougher than most because of it. If you think that some white guys saying 'Somebody's gonna' get a hurt real bad' compares with a daily assault of 'F**king Paki!', then you are mistaken.

Thanks to Russell breaking down stereotypes and showing that our brown asses can be cool, successful and can take the piss out of ourselves, he's made all of our lives easier and allowed people who may not know anything about us to learn to accept us and see beyond the colour of our skin.

As we often note, people being offended by RP's material are simply dealing with their own issues...
